About chef and author Pemba Lama

Ex-Gurkha soldier, Pemba Lama served in the British Army for 23 years, retiring as a senior Gurkha Catering Officer. Pemba has served in many countries, experiencing a variety of cuisines and cultures and in 1993 became a Catering Instructor in Hong Kong after completing the Advanced Chef Training in Higher Culinary Skills at the Army School of Catering in the UK.

On retiring Pemba joined the Civil Service as a Specialist Instructional Officer at the Defence Food Services School in the UK. He now teaches catering and ethnic cookery to Armed Forces chefs and various clients in the UK. Pemba has cooked for many prestigious clients including, Her Majesty The Queen, the Dalai Lama and Jamie Oliver.

This book follows on from Midland's earlier successful book on the De Havilland Tiger Moth and examines the history of the DH60 Moth, which was first built in the 1920s and was one of the most significant aircraft built up to that time. In the 1920s the Air Ministry, aware of the need to encourage an interest in flying in order to have a base of potential recruits for the RAF in a time of crisis, produced specifications for an aircraft which could be used by flying clubs which it was subsidizing. The officially backed prototypes were not favored, and it was de Havilland's freelance DH.60 Moth which first flew in February 1925 that proved ideal. The Moth quickly became the ideal private owners' airplane. As the efficiency of production increased, engines were improved and the cost of the aircraft dropped. To the DH60 Moth can be directly attributed the beginning of the flying club movement in many parts of the world and the growth of private ownership of light aircraft which is still flourishing today. Moths were built under license in France, Sweden, Finland, and the USA. They were raced, aerobatted in formation, used by most long-distance pilots of the 1920s and 30s seeking to create records, flown on floats and skis and used worldwide by air forces and government agencies. The successful Gipsy engine was designed specifically for the DH60 Moth, and in 1927 the Moth's wooden airframes evolved into metal structures which spawned the Tiger Moth. This book will appeal to members of the Moth Club, to the many round the world who have flown or operated the airplane, and to those interested in aviation history. The content focuses on the early days of the Moth and its pivotal role with the early flying club days, but the story of this successful aircraft is carried through to the present day which sees many examples of this historic and seminal aircraft still taking to the skies.

Le chien n’est pas le meilleur ami de l’homme, mais de sa femme. Enfin de la mienne. Dont, depuis six mois, je partage l’existence dans la peau, sous le poil ras et noir, zébré de brun – les académiques me qualifieront de bringé, mais ça peut paraître excessif – d’un bouledogue français avec pedigree et hautes origines. Avant, j’étais directeur commercial dans une grosse boîte qui payait bien et exigeait en conséquence. Elle, avait choisi de ne travailler qu’à temps partiel pour élever des enfants que nous n’avons pas eus. Je le dis tout de suite, je n’étais pour rien dans l’improductivité de nos amours : je possédais sans doute des gamètes de tout premier choix. Je crois qu’elle acceptait difficilement de ne pas réussir à procréer, ce dont personnellement je me réjouissais plutôt. Je l’avoue, j’éprouvais pour les enfants un intérêt approximatif, limité à l’envoi d’un chèque à un lointain filleul, dont elle devait, chaque année, me rappeler la date d’anniversaire. Pour la consoler, je lui avais payé un abonnement au fitness et des cours de peinture sur soie. Au début, elle ne peignait que des angelots, elle a arrêté lorsque je lui en ai fait la remarque, et s’est mise à représenter des choses abstraites et très moches à base de rouge orangé et jaune de cadmium. C’était quand même préférable aux chérubins, et ses amies aimaient beaucoup. J’ai même financé le vernissage de son expo qui a, je dois le dire, et à ma grande stupéfaction, connu un certain succès.
